Examining the motivation of orientalists for translating the Quran and Quranic activities

Abstract

The Holy Quran has invited and encouraged all people, especially scholars and thinkers, to think, reflect, and understand. Since the original language of the Quran is Arabic, thinkers and scholars of other nations and religions have tried to translate it into the languages ​​of their people. Western thinkers or orientalists have made the most contribution and activity in this field, and they have done so with various motivations. The aim of this research, which was conducted with an analytical and descriptive method, is to examine the motivation of orientalists for these Quranic translations and activities. The findings of this research show that although most orientalists have made mistakes in understanding, translating, and interpreting the Holy Quran, which are due to their assumptions about the sources and sources of the Quran; however, their main motivation is to introduce the Quran in a hostile manner and to highlight some jurisprudential, legal, penal, etc. issues, in order to introduce Islam and the Quran to Western societies based on their own political and biased goals. Therefore, many Orientalist translators do not consider the Quran to be a divine and revealed book, or they have a distorted understanding, or they have a hostile attitude towards the Quran and Islam.
